An Insider’s Experience at AIBTM

By Katie Yandell, Coordinator, Global Initiatives
June 2012 was my first trip to Baltimore, and my first AIBTM Show.  Being new to all things hosted buyer, and being new to the PCMA Staff, AIBTM was my first tradeshow experience.  Not sure what to expect, I was impressed to see how the whole show came together.
Looking around the show floor, I was so impressed with the diversity of the countries represented, from Shanghai, to South Africa, to Prague, to Dubai. In that moment, I was convinced that this show was the ideal …

The Optical Society
Welcome to the inaugural issue of PCMA’s Global Insights! This newsletter is designed to highlight PCMA’s Global Programs and feature articles, insights and experiences of interest to the growing global events industry. I think we can all agree that the world has become much smaller as technology and transportation enables almost instant access. Many of us in this industry are reaching well beyond our own borders whether it be serving our members and customers world-wide or building the infrastructure needed to support …

PCMA Across the Pond

By Michelle Crowley, Manager, Global Development
Professional Convention Management Association
Spending last week at the 2013 Confex Tradeshow in London, I was reminded of the relationships this industry builds.  PCMA participated in Confex for the first time, presenting six education sessions geared towards corporate planners over the three day show at ExCeL, London’s largest convention center. The onsite panelists had all participated in the 2012 PCMA Global Corporate Summit that occurred in Scotland last July.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the group to reconnect, catch up and share more stories and experiences.  Even though they …

By Brad Lewis, Executive Director, PCMA Education Foundation
Social media in attendance promotion – important element or not worth the effort?
On the home page of PCMA now through the end of March we ask, “How important is using social media to meeting attendance success”?  Half way through the polling period, 75% of respondents say it is somewhat (50%) or very (25%) important while 25% say it’s not important at all. What do you think?  You can vote on this quick, non-scientific web poll through the end of March on the PCMA …

PCMA in Latin America

By Michelle Crowley, Manager, Global Development
Professional Convention Management Association
What the region offers
The majority of PCMA members organize meetings outside of their home country, with a growing percentage in Latin America.  This region holds great opportunity as general business investment has increased the last several years, as well as accessibility and infrastructure for the meetings industry specifically.  ICCA research shows that in 2002 there were 397 international congresses taking place in Latin America, in 2011 there were more than 1,000. PCMA members looking to hold meetings in this region can find new …

Millennial Mindset: Should You Pay Your Interns?

By: Daniel Metz, Specialist, Web Marketing
William Shakespeare penned the statement some 400 years ago, “to pay or not to pay, that is the question,” I may have misquoted that…but the question applies for nearly all organizations today.
Nearly everyone could use an intern but not everyone can pay them. Hey why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free, right? Because interns aren’t cows, they’re people.
In a recent survey conducted by Intern Bridge, the nation’s leading college recruiting research and consulting firm they found some interesting results:

51.3% of …

Rise Above the Competition

By Karla Brandau, Solo-Presenter, Tuesday, January 15, 8:30 a.m.
Program: Rise Above the Competition with a Culture of Innovation
Business & Leadership Skills
It is no secret that competition is increasing in our world. Sophisticated leaders of organizations are successful because they constantly invent new ways to solve new problems – problems that did not exist last year or perhaps the last month – in order to rise above their competition.
To invent new ways to solve problems in an increasingly competitive landscape requires recognition that everyone in your organization is a technologist meaning …

Millennial Mindset: Career Tips From a 20-Something

By: Daniel Metz, Specialist, Online Marketing
Professional Convention Management Association
A recent CNN story detailed career lessons those in the workforce could learn from Gen Y. The five biggest lessons he thought could be learned are that you should expect to switch careers, advance your education, focus on job experiences, stay optimistic and consult your elders.
I’d like to tack on four additional points I’ve observed in my young career.
Go Digital or Go Home
Millennials LOVE the Internet and you should too. There’s no doubt you believe in the importance and see the value …
